A Kansas vacation spells history, natural wonders, and space adventures for the whole family.
In Wichita, don't miss the famous Old Cow town Museum, where you'll travel back to the 1860s. Costumed actors and a working farm make history come alive in this 17-acre open-air museum. The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson features a full-scale replica of the Space Shuttle and the world's fastest plane, the SR 71 Blackbird spy plane, on display. Children and adults can attend astronaut-training sessions and view a laser light show. Cap your far-out adventure at Kansas Splashdown, America's largest space-themed indoor water park.
Animal lovers will love Sedgwick County Zoo, with some 2,000 animals of 436 species on 247 acres. No wonder it has been ranked among the best in the world, and among Kansas's top tourist attractions. There's also the Rolling Hills Wildlife Adventure in Salina, with more than 80 rare animals, some on the endangered species list. The Maxwell Wildlife Refuge and Buffalo Tour in Canton features the state's largest buffalo herd, as well as elk and more than 100 species of birds. Take a drive along the National Wetlands and Wildlife Scenic Byway for a view of Cheyenne Bottoms. If you're lucky, you might see a bald eagle, peregrine falcon, or any of 320 species of birds in what is considered the most important migration point for birds in North America.
For an authentic experience of life on the prairie, visit the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in Cottonwood Falls. Hike along the nature trail or tour the Spring Hill Ranch, featuring a limestone barn. And what Kansas vacation would be complete without a visit to The Oz Museum in Wamego? On display are Oz memorabilia from the movie TheWizard of Oz starring Judy Garland, TheWiz starring Diana Ross, and items from around the world inspired by Frank L. Baum's classic.
