Blackbirds Lodge
Authors from around the world have often described Montana as the “last best place” to visit or live. I want to introduce you to one of the places that helped them describe Montana as such – Blackbirds Lodge! Over its eleven year history, it has hosted guests from 47 different states, 11 foreign countries and even numerous outdoor ESPN TV crews. People from everywhere will always know it as “Blackbirds.” It is the central spot on the Bitterroot River for everything that had to do with world-class fly-fishing. Blackbirds offered some the best fly fishing in the country right out its back door, but customers can also fish many other famous rivers in the area including the famed “Blackfoot” river that was made famous in the movie “A River Runs Through It.” This, and many other blue ribbon rivers are less than an hour commute from the lodge.
With all of the fun things to do in the valley, Blackbirds Lodge is a great central point for your vacation. For winter guests, several excellent downhill and cross country ski areas are available. Great snowmobiling is just up the road as well, with miles and miles of groomed trails. With warmer weather, guests often have a tough time deciding on the day’s activities. World-class fishing and hunting abound. Hiking, horseback riding in the mountains, antique shopping, wildlife viewing, boating and many other things will compete for your time. Traveling from Missoula to Hamilton, you can also get your fill of museums, art galleries and festivals. I guess that’s my honest sales pitch of the area for now, so let me point out a few of my very favorite aspects of the lodge property.
First, the lodge dwelling is approximately 5500 square feet (highest grade cedar construction) resting on 6 acres of land. The property goes to and across the Bitterroot River south of Victor, Montana. I’ve seen moose, elk, deer, bear, bald eagles, fox and pheasant on the property. Owning both sides of the river is unique enough, but the lodge property borders an additional 250 acres of BLM land on the other side of the river, protecting the natural wilderness and beauty forever! The lodge property along with the BLM land offers some great hunting for the upland bird enthusiast in the fall as well as a trophy white tail deer bow-hunter.
There is also a small pond on the property that is home to stocked rainbow trout, ducks and geese. It’s also great for ice-skating in the winter. As you look at the lodge from the front, it’s hard to get a mental picture of its real size. Take a look from the river and a whole new perspective opens up. From there, you can see the split-level of the structure and the professional landscaping all around the upper section of the lodge property. You’ll also notice the great 1000 square foot deck overlooking the river that is great for summer entertaining.
The inside of the lodge is well laid out for entertaining or just relaxing with your own group. The living area has a new Mitsubishi 62” High Definition television and a scrumptious “all leather” sofa and loveseat combination. The kitchen is set up with all modern appliances along with new cookware that will handle most any size cooking job. It also has 5 large bedrooms, 4 baths and many extras you can see in our photos.
One particular area that is always talked about and frequented by the lodge guests is the handmade bar, fireplace and lounge downstairs. A local craftsman made this bar from Montana lodgepole pine. It took over a year to complete, but well worth the wait.
Finally, the front of the lodge is also unique in many ways. It has a bold ranch style entrance, ample parking, tall Montana pines, over 25 different fall color deciduas trees, annual bulbs, seasonal flowers and shrubs and one of the largest raspberry patches in western Montana. There is no way you can use all of the raspberries it produces each summer, but the local bird population is glad to help with anything you don’t harvest yourself.
I hope you will look at the many images on this web site. You can see what a really special place we offer. If you decide to book your vacation with us, you’ll not only discover the special things I talked about, but so many more that will make Blackbirds Lodge your part-time piece of the “last best place” on earth.
