Traveling Tips that Are Not in Your Usual Travel Guide
If you are planning to vacation at a vacation home rental in the Big City or near a big city, there are a few things to be aware of before you begin your journey. Any travel has dangers, whether you are vacationing in a rural environment, on a private beach or the city. A family can be held up at gun point in their home while walking to your local convenience store or to a camp store in the woods. The first thing to do, especially if you have children, is to make sure that everyone is together at all times. Of course if you have older children and teens, you can’t expect them to be with you every waking moment. If you and your family are from a small town and this is your first trip to a big city, you have to look less like a tourist and more like a civilian.
Many tourists fall prey to ‘city slickers’ all the time, unfortunately, many people give them the satisfaction. So, whether you are traveling to New York City, Philadelphia or Toronto, you have to be prepared. At home you may be able to count your money in the parking lot of your local grocery store, in the city it’s a different story. Teach your children not to count their money on the street is imperative, advise them to wait until they are safe indoors. If they decide to buy food or products such as tee-shirts, balloons and souvenirs by street vendors and they have to go into their wallets to take out cash, make sure that they do it quickly.
Make sure that when you are walking with your family that everyone understands that they are in the city and they must be alert. Teach your kids to look around themselves and especially from behind. They don’t have to be paranoid they just have to be cautious just in case someone tries to mug them.
When vacationing at your favorite vacation home in the suburbs, the woods or the beach, you may get away with not locking the doors during the day time. When vacationing in the city, no matter how luxurious your vacation home may be, it is recommended to always lock your doors.
If your travel requires that you take the subway to the theater, the museum or to local shopping areas, make sure that you know where you are going and how much your fare is ahead of time. Have your fare out ahead of time so that it is easier to pull out rather than opening up your purse or wallet. It is advised that travelers who will be taking public transportation to purchase tickets in advance rather than struggling to purchase tickets inside of a subway.
