What to do If you Get Snowed in during Your Winter Vacation

Thursday, May 31, 2007

Being snowed in when you have no where in particular to go such as to work or school can be fun especially during a vacation ‘if’ you are well prepared. If you are traveling during the winter months to the mountains, the woods or near a ski resort, there are a few things to consider during your travels. If you are staying in an area that has great restaurants, the last thing a person will think about is stocking up for a snow storm. Make sure that you stay at a snow proof are. Snow proof meaning, if there is a major snow storm and your family is snowed in, they would be able to still have a safe and enjoyable vacation. Unfortunately, for travelers who love staying at hotels, they are not known to have the proper accommodations for patrons if they are snowed in like the comfort of a vacation home rental.

It is advised to stock up on at least 3 days worth of food. It is also recommended to rent a vacation home that has a fire wood burning stove just in case you loose electricity. Many homes already have candles; it doesn’t hurt to pick up a few extra candles just in case. Make sure you pack snow suits, thermal undergarments, snow boots and extra blankets. Don’t wait until snow begins to accumulate to decide to go shopping. The worst thing to happen to someone, especially during a vacation, is being stranded during a major winter storm in the middle of nowhere.

Make sure that you travel in a front wheel drive with sturdy snow tires. Your car must be winterized prior to travels to avoid preventable breakdowns. If you must go out during a storm, make sure that you stay tuned to the local news weather report. Many civilians have been involved in unnecessary accidents and situations simply because they didn’t adhere to the winter weather advisory.

Children should not be allowed to play in the snow during a major snow storm. Make sure your children bring along indoor activities such as games and DVDs. Don’t forget to include a fun snack such as buttered popcorn or a fresh baked batch of chocolate cookies with hot chocolate and their favorite beverage.
