Staying Fit While On Vacation

by Vacation Rentals By Owner
Friday, June 29, 2007

Taking a vacation can be disruptive to your normal habits such as eating and exercising. It is possible to do a little planning which will allow you to enjoy your vacation and still not bring home any extra pounds

When packing your suitcase pack a pair of workout shoes, exercise clothing, T-shirts, exercise bras, socks, and a swimming suit. You may want to take additional items such as your pedometer, yoga mat, food journal, or any other items that will help you stay on track

The great solution for your vacation could be a vacation rental. You can cook any food you need on the private kitchen; some vacation homes offer gym memberships; rental cabins (especially mountain cabins) can offer hiking and biking trails that will help you to stay fit

Use the Internet to search the area restaurants and find out if they offer any healthy choices. Many will post their menu online but if they do not you can always make a phone call. If you are renting a vacation home, ask the owner for recommendations

There are many gym memberships, which are covered in any area where they have a facility such as Gold’s Gym or the YMCA. Many vacation homes also offer common gym facilities as well as pools. You can check to see what will be available in the area you plan to visit

If you are flying, you might want to check ahead to find out what they will be serving. You can always pack yourself a healthy lunch to carry on the plane with you

If traveling by car you can pack a cooler with healthy choices such as fruits and vegetables. You can also throw in some yogurt and cottage cheese to eat for a light snack. Many of these type items are available in single serving containers and travel quite easily. Always have plenty of bottled water on hand. If you have an insulated jug, that would also be handy to carry

If you plan to stop and have a meal in a restaurant you need to make healthy choices such as baked or broiled instead of fried. For fast food you can choose a lean sub sandwich without the mayo, or at least the low fat mayo. Many fast food chains offer nutritional information on all of their selections to help you make wise choices

Make regular stops and take advantage of this time to take a quick walk through a park or just around the parking lot. This will help you feel refreshed an invigorated

Always eat a full meal before going to the airport. This helps to resist the temptation of Starbucks and Cinnabons. If you have to purchase a meal at the airport, look for a place that has healthy choices. Limit or avoid alcohol and caffeine since these tend to cause dehydration

Try to avoid people movers, opting to walk instead. Wear your comfortable athletic shoes and be prepared in case you have to speed up the pace a little

You will probably get more exercise on a vacation than you realize since you will be touring new places. Take a pedometer with you to keep up with how much you actually do in one day. If the hotel has a gym, take advantage of it

If you are staying with friends or family you may need to explain to them that you are trying to stick to healthy choices in order to maintain your healthy lifestyle. Try to stay with some type of exercise routine such as walking. You can ask a friend or family member to join you. Offer to cook at least one meal for your hosts. This is a way to show them you appreciate what they are doing while at the same time showing them how tasty low fat cooking can be. Most of the vacation homes offer fully equipped kitchen, BBQs and fire pits

Before you leave home, stock up your freezer and pantry with healthy foods that will be waiting on your return. This way you will not have any excuse to continue eating as you did while on vacation. If possible, get an appointment with a personal trainer who can help you get back on track with your workouts. If you don’t have a trainer you can always call a friend to go to some workouts with you

Vacation times are meant to be fun and relaxing so try not to stress if you put on a pound or two while you are gone. The best thing for you to do is get right back on track with your healthy eating and lifestyle. You’ll lose those pounds before you know it

I don't know if you should worry THAT much about your weight on vacation. You have 1-2 weeks oer year only to relax, why go through all this troubles just not to gain a few pounds? I don't think it will be easy to gain in such a short time. But again, this is my point of view, when we travel I eat without borders.

We went to the Smokeys last year and I gained 5 ponds over 2 weeks! Vacation rentals is a good idea, but when you eat out, you really think what to buy because of the money.

  • For your next vacation think Barcelona!  Saturday, June 23, 2007
Vacations abroad are very expensive. If not, a quarter of the world’s population would be traveling to Europe for holidays and vacations. The largest expense for vacations abroad is the lodging. You can save money on transportation and meals but it is more difficult to save money on holiday accommodations. The great thing about a vacation rentals in Barcelona is having the opportunity to take in the many sights and sounds of the Barcelona culture. With more cash to spend you will be able to enjoy the local culture in a much more natural setting than a motel room provides. In many cases these vacation homes are found close to landmark attractions which are located in and around the city. Many of these sites will be within walking distance from the home.

  • Vacation Is Needed To Rejuvenate The Mind  Wednesday, June 20, 2007
Taking a vacation is a time to relax and forget all of the stress we face in our everyday lives. It allows our brain to stop and take a breather so that when we return we are rested and ready to tackle the tasks that lie ahead. For most people, everyday life is stressful. We are on information overload, we have to learn new computer protocols, we have to keep up with our schedules, and we are under more stress at work. On top of this we have to remember cell phone numbers, PIN numbers, and computer passwords...
