Protect your house while away at vacation rental.

by VacationRentalsListed.com

With the arrival of vacation rental getaway, vacationers need to make plans to protect their home while they are away. Overlooking this could prove to be costly.

We would like to offer you some tips that can help you not to worry while you are away in this dream cabin rental or beachfront cottage:

  • If you are going to be leaving home for a vacation home you should stop the delivery of newspapers and mail until your return. This will help make things look more normal. A build-up of papers is a sure-fire sign to a burglar that you are not at home.
  • If you are expecting the delivery of any packages while you are gone you might want to contact the delivery company and ask them to hold it until you return. Or you could also ask a friend or family member to pick the package up for you.
  • Let your neighbors know that you will be gone and ask them to keep an eye turned in your house direction. If they see any suspicious activity, tell them to call 911.
  • Make sure someone knows where you are. If you are staying in vacation rental, ask the owner the address, phone number and all other related information about the vacation home.
  • Leave an extra car key with somebody at home just in case of an emergency.
  • Leave a house key with a trusted neighbor or a friend when you leave to your vacation home. If your house is under burglary alarm protection, instruct the neighbor what to do.
  • Put all of your important documents in a safety deposit box outside the house so that you will have them in the event of an emergency.
  • When you return home you should thoroughly check your house to make sure everything is as you left it. If you think someone has broken into your home you should call the law enforcement officials immediately.

We came home from vacation 2 years ago and my computer was gone. Everything was in perfect shape, like totaly un-touched. only PC was gone, went to police, did the whole report thing and still no news.

Good advice! It also helps to have dogs that bark. Of course then, you need to have someone to come by and walk and feed them.
