You can count yourself lucky if you are only planning to travel across town to Grandma’s house for Christmas. There are only a few days left before
Christmas vacation and people everywhere are doing a mad dash to the shopping malls to
buy their gifts in time to ship them to family members for Christmas.
When I was a child we usually only had about a ten minute drive by car. As an
adult I now realize the horror of trying to travel at this time of year. The
train, flying, or driving is stressful because of the increased traffic of the
season. Many people end up sleeping on the floor of the airport because of
flight delays.
If you choose to wait until Christmas day to travel it actually gets better
because the roads and the airports are practically empty. You might want to plan
to eat at the Waffle House because very few places are open where you can get a
good meal.
A much better idea would be to find a vacation rental in the area you plan to
visit and take a much deserved family vacation. Vacation rentals are usually available in most areas and will already be furnished with everything except
your clothes and food. You can plan your travel on days when the roads are not
so congested. Here are a few more tips for you to consider if you plan to travel
over the Christmas holidays.
- If possible avoid flying on weekends since is the time when airlines are
the busiest.
- Book an early flight to avoid the rush.
- Weather is an unknown so you need to allow enough time to arrive on time
if you encounter bad roads.
- Try flying out of a smaller airport. The extra drive time might well be
worth the time you save on flight delays.
- Leave yourself enough time to find parking.
- When traveling by car try to get an early start and pack plenty of
snacks. You also might want to plan an alternate route in case you encounter
bad weather.
With a little planning your Christmas travel plans can be enjoyable and allow
you to spend the holidays with your family and loved ones.
