Insurance against hurricanes; are they available for Caribbean vacation rentals?

Tuesday, April 01, 2008

Getting stuck in Caribbean vacation which ends in a hurricane will really ruin your vaction. This si because not only will the hotel you book be at risk, you will never know when you will be forced to take shelter in a secure shelter with other guests.

Though you may have insurance, it will not provide coverage for your inconvenience. It will only pay for any injuries you succumb to and damaged possessions. There are some hotels in the Caribbean that offer ‘hurricane guarantees’ where though you don’t get your money back, there are some benefits you can look forward to.

If your vacation gets affected by a hurricane, Sandals offers you a free replacement holiday that can be used within a year. While SuperClubs gives you a voucher to compensate the number of disrupted nights. This is valid for the same month, the next year. In both situations, you can avail this coverage only if the storm is classified by the US National Weather Service while your flight cost is not covered.

The hotels belonging to the Bermuda Hotel Association offer their own form of guarantee. Like if a hurricane is predicted about 200 miles within the radius of the island, in five days of your arrival to Bermuda, you can cancel your trip without having to bear any penalty. Then if you are hit by a hurricane, you get replacement holidays without coverage for your flights.

So the best thing you have to do if you plan a vacation to the Caribbean or any hurricane destination, you can protect yourself by booking a package with a bonded tour operator. With this option, you don’t fly into a storm but will be offered a choice between an alternative destination or a refund.

Hwoever in the case of severe weather conditions, you find that tour operators may evacuate you. Like during the Hurricane Wilma which destroyed the Gulf of Mexico in the year 2005, thousands of British holidaymakers were airlifted and given pro-rata refunds for the part of the vacation that was lost or disrupted because of the hurricane.
