No smoking zones, no smoking banners, no secondhand smoking in a suite or
arriving down at the lobby, and no smoke in the balcony before sleeping, Disney
World Hotels ban smoking for good in its hotel chains, buildings, resorts, and
complexes. Company officials have taken strict action banning cigarette smoking
from 1st June, 2007, in every 22 Disney-owned hotel rooms, guest rooms, patios,
balconies, time-share rooms and many other areas excluding official smoking
zones. In January 2000, Disney World water parks and theme permitted smoking
only in designated areas.
Walt Disney World Resort is a located in a 40 square mile for recreation complex
and entertainment near
Orlando. It includes 2 water parks, 4 theme parks, above
20 resort hotels for retail, entertainment areas and recreation facilities.
Initially Walt Disney Parks and Resorts made the exertion on Disneyland’s three
hotels in California previous year but did not banned smoking at Disney World
Hotels as the demand for smoking rooms was higher at the resort in
Florida
compared to Disneyland. But consequently that demand also declined.
It has been noticed that demand for smoking decreasing drastically and the
Senior Vice President of Disney World, Erin Wallace, announced in the beginning
that their has been significant decline in smoking although they have specified
target for ban smoking in 96 percent of their rooms and remaining percent were
reserved for the smokers, and now they are looking for the complete ban in
smoking in all the Disney World Hotels. He also stated that they are making
modifications to their actions relying on customers demand. Such action
harmonizes their endeavors to allow guests with the wellbeing living options
they are demanding.
However, Disney World Hotels will allow outdoor areas for smoking in private
locations in all its chain. Disney World Hotels ban smoking which tends to
affect the national drift significantly but some hotels like Hotel Plaza
Boulevard and Royal Plaza Hotel, in the Downtown Disney, allows smoking which is
located on the Disney property but it is not owned by the Disney Company. Well
it has been unclear that this will enhance the guests towards such hotels. And
Disney officials have stated that this will assist hotels guests to rebook for
them who have already reserved and chain smokers.
One will find expensive smoking cigarette in any of the non-smoking zone in
Disney Hotels as they are suppose to pay a cleaning fee around $250 to $500 and
will be added up in the customer’s bill. Cleaning fee is the fees charged from
the customer for restoring of fabrics like comforters and hangings and the
extensive cleaning for all the things which are affected.
It has been estimated that ban smoking will prove to be significant in
accommodating more guests who are asking for non-smoking suites or rooms.
DiPietre for Disney World Hotels acclaimed that they are reacting to what their
customers are requesting for and also added that their customers are asking for
non-smoking rooms overwhelmingly. It has been noticed that number of guests
asking for smoking allowed rooms has been decreasing in past several years.
Some have commented that Disney’s money will move towards other subsidiary and
some has said that this is the most appropriate and positive move. Smell for
smoke remains for longer duration even after smoker checked out which affect the
guests who are allergic of smoke and accommodate the same room.
Majority of Disney World Hotel guests will come across to this as a welcome
change, but what for who doesn’t want to avoid smoking? Spokesperson for Disney
World Hotels informed that they have rest aside around 40 rooms for smokers.
Such a change overall given a positive response from the guests and Disney will
carry on such practice to cover the remaining smoking-allowed Disney Hotels.
It has been announced by the Gary Nolan, U.S Regional Director of The Smoker’s
Club, working for smoker’s rights group, that if Disney is not having demand for
smoking permitted rooms, then they should even reduce the rooms for smoking in
theme park altogether.
Disney is looking forward for smoke-free atmosphere and they don’t want to be
influenced by secondhand smoke. Theme parks located on Disney’s property will
not keep ban on smoking even if Disney’s propaganda takes effect coming months.
They allocate rooms for smoking and can smoke freely without any surcharges, for
example, Royal Plaza Hotel provides 4th floor entirely for smokers.
Such ban on smoking influenced from the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa who came
up with smoke-free environment right from its inception in 2001. Then it was
extended to the Disney World Hotels and Paradise Pier Hotels. When Disney World
Hotels announced that they are putting out smoking for good, it was one of the
largest only resort complexes to take such an initiative.
Even the secondhand smoke meant for smoke from lighting tobacco yields produced
by the smokers. Experts say that when smoke of tobacco infect with the air,
particularly in the encircled areas where everyone have to breathe, divulging
nonsmokers as well as smokers to its destructive causes. Smoking is deadlier and
it even affects nonsmokers if inhaling tobacco smoke which leads to lung cancer.
Chris McCalla, an advocate of smokers-rights and Legislative Director for the
Retail Tobacco Dealers of America from Columbus, GA, suggested that smokers will
choose their wallets. He further stated that 18 percent of the civilians of
America are addicted to tobacco products and it tended to be the deserving
minority for any business to discharge.
To please most of the Disney’s guests banning has been done in part. But
gradually customers will come in to use of such amendment and majority
appreciates such idea taken up by the Disney.
The Department of Health (DOH) has also declared that number of hotels and
restaurants have devoted to make their regions smoke-free that too at the day of
celebration of World No-Tobacco Day on 31st May. The World Health Organization
(WHO) also make a rigorous attempt for controlling the use of tobacco smoking,
recommending all countries to ban smoking at hotels, restaurants and even at
public places.
