Youth travel is becoming a new trend

Traveling is something we associate with adult audience, but recent study shows that children who travel more, keep traveling even when they grow up. While youth travel has become a trend in the past few years, children who traveled more are likely to go colleges abroad and take their love for travel across their life time.

Michael Palmer, executive director of the Student and Youth Travel Association in Clarkston, Michigan is right when he says “There is also a connection between trips and academic achievement, and it makes them better global citizens.”

Youth travel is one of fastest growing segments in the travel industry and shares a 20% market across the globe. This segment includes people under 25 years of age including college students, high school children and even school children who travel for school and social engagements like church, science, sports, choir, band, civics or language classes.

This rise in youth travel is more sized by the fact that over 200,000 American college students went abroad to study in 2005, up by about 8% from 2004.
According to a research undertaken by the Michigan State University for SYTA, more than 60% of children aged between 12 and 18 took a trip in 2005, and the average age for children’s first school trip is 10 now a days.

Not only the travel modes but also the destinations across the world are looking forward to youth travelers and are trying to cater to them more since they know that if a teenager visits the destination, there is every chance that he or she will come back for more. While the focus was on senior citizens previously, it has shifted to the younger travelers today.

Favorite destinations for young travelers today are Washington, D.C., Chicago, New York, California and Orlando, Fla., within the country today. Many students are also known to visit Ottawa, Toronto and also far off places in Australia and Europe.

The mindset of children has also changed today and children are not fearful anymore. At a younger age (below 18) more conservative destinations are preferred, but older students are not skeptical in trying out destinations abroad.

  The US State Department has announced that US citizens who plan to travel to Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean will be able to show a government issued photo ID and a receipt from the State Department showing they have applied for a passport.
