This is the week that summer vacation officially begins as schools all across the country close for the summer. Most of vacation homes are already booked and waiting for first families to come. Tips For Parents From The New York Psychological Association (NYSPA) *

For many families this will cause scheduling conflicts for the parents who will now have to find, and pay for, day care for the children. The children are all looking at the fun they plan to have while the parents are under stress about day care and planning a family vacation.

A national survey in 2006 which was conducted by the American Psychological Association (APA), reported that children are a big factor for parents experiencing stress. There is also the stress of the financial strain experienced by paying daycare and planning a family vacation.

Although it is silent, there are social pressures put on families during the summer months to take a vacation. Often this is not the best time financially and taking time away from work may not be an easy task to accomplish. It is important to have set expectations about the family vacation, but it is even more important to try and alleviate the stress.

Often when the stress of summer is added on top of the other stress which is experienced daily, people will tend to turn to unhealthy habits such as drinking or overeating. This type behavior can lead to serious health problems if not corrected immediately.

Here are some tips that psychologists offer to help with the management of summertime stress:

Know when you are stressed and examine how differently you act and feel when you are stressed.

Identify what triggers your stress. Ask yourself if the stress is a result of planning a family vacation, financial worries, work, or health problems.

• Examine how you deal with your stress. See if you are using unhealthy behavior as a way to cope. Try to make time for the things that are really important and plan your family activities to suit your family needs and desires.
• Have expectations which are realistic; don’t think this summer is going to be any different from other times. If you can’t afford to take an expensive vacation maybe you could take off from work a day and go out for a picnic with the family.
• Plan ahead. Book children friendly vacation rental where you and your children will be comfortable.

Look for healthy was to manage your stress such as taking a walk with the family or starting a family project. Always remember that unhealthy behavior is difficult to change once it gets started. It is best if you tackle one behavior at a time so that you don’t attempt too much at once.

Relying on your family and friends for support is a great way to deal with stressful times. If the time comes when you are feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope you might want to consider seeking professional help from a psychologist who can help you manage the stress you are under.

When you cope with your stress in a way that is healthy you are setting a role model image to the other family members. The unhealthy behavior may temporarily help with the symptoms but over time it will create more problems and more stress.
